Performance Monitoring

Presenter is a real time application. This means that it creates many images per second and displays them continuously in order to create the illusion of motion.

The speed at which Presenter can create images depends on many factors, including:

  • the speed and power of your graphics card (GPU)
  • the speed and power of your computer's central processing unit (CPU)
  • how quickly data can be accessed from your hard drive
  • how much data is being rendered for each frame
  • the types of "looks" that are being rendered

When Presenter is running smoothly, it generates 30 images (frames) per second when using default settings. Any excess processing power is relinquished for other applications to use, thereby keeping your entire system smooth and responsive.

There are situations when the amount of work needed to render a single frame is so great that Presenter can not maintain a rate of 30 frames per second (fps). When this happens, the display may appear jerky or uneven. This is likely to happen occasionally even with powerful graphics cards and fast CPUs. If it occurs frequently, however, this may be an indication that your system is underpowered in some way.

To get a quantitative measurement of how well Presenter works on your system, you can turn on the On-Screen Status Display. By default, this setting can be toggled on/off by pressing the function key labeled F6 during a full screen show. You can also elect to have the display on by default by checking the appropriate box in the Advanced Options dialog box. (To bring up this dialog box, from the main FXEdit dialog choose the Preferences tab, then click on the Advanced Options button.)
