FAQ: Performance and Appearance

What could cause Presenter to suddenly run at very slow frame rates when it was running fast previously?
Presenter is sensitive to other applications or utilities that use overlay planes. Overlays are used to display content over the top of other content. Here are two common examples:
  1. Microsoft Outlook notification pop up that displays a summary dialog when new email arrives
  2. Turning on Mouse / Pointer Options / Display pointer trails.
Having these options turned on, when running Windows can slow Presenter performance dramatically. Turning those Windows and Office options off will assure that Presenter runs at top speed.
Can updated graphics (video) drivers improve performance?
Yes. Updated video drivers address both quality and performance issues. It's always our recommendation to keep the latest drivers loaded on your system. When customers call with display issues, current graphics drivers are the first thing we investigate.
How do I know what graphics card and/or display driver I have on my system?
The best way to get that information is to run DxDiag. For details, please see Using DxDiag.
I see a lot of "jaggies" and "crawlies". Can this be improved?
In most cases, yes. Please see our detailed description and analysis of anti-aliasing page.
Do any thin and light laptops run Presenter?
Many recent thin and light notebook computers have quite capable graphics performance -- to the point that those systems can deliver a high quality presentation. However, we don't recommend running Event, 3D, S3D, or Master Presenter on such systems.
Does screen resolution or anti-aliasing affect performance?
Absolutely. High resolution screens require more horsepower to drive at high frame rates. Hardware anti-aliasing also places significant demands on the graphics system.
Is there a way to measure the performance of my system?
Yes. You can monitor the real time performance of your system or you can run the Hardware Performance Test FXD test suite that is available from the FXD Gallery page.
How do I tune my system for best performance?
Please see our Performance Tips page for details.
How can I get a feel for the visual complexity of a particular presentation?
Putting your display in wireframe mode gives a good indication.
